Home remedies for cat urine removal

Forums are filled with home remedies using common household ingredients for cat urine removal. Most of them are short term remedies that mask the odor but do not eliminate the underlying cause of the odor -- the cat urine itself.

Some of the more common home remedies for cat urine removal are as follows:

  • Disinfectants -- temporarily kill the bacteria that are digesting the urine, they do not eliminate the urine. Since the source of the odor is not removed the odor will return.
  • Vinegar -- may set the stain and lock in the odor
  • Bleach -- may fade colors, may weaken fabric, may lock in the odor
  • Ammonia -- may remove the stain but does nothing for the odor, your cat may even be attracted to the scent as it is similar to cat urine
  • Oxy Products -- may remove the stain but does not eliminate the urine. Since the source of the odor is not removed the odor will return.
  • Mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap -- can weaken fabric or carpet backing
  • Paint or Polyurethane -- Locks in the dried urine but allows the odors to escape
