How to choose a cat urine removerWith the wide array of cleaners on the market it is hard to choose the best cleaner for removing cat urine and the resulting odor. Understanding the underlying cause of the odor will help you in your choice of cleaner. The odor from cat urine comes from the bacteria that are living on the organic components of the urine. As the bacteria break down the cat urine they release malodorous gases resulting in the odor. If the urine is deposited on a surface that absorbs the cat urine then it is unlikely that washing the surface will get rid of all the cat urine. The cleaner needs to penetrate the surface and be absorbed much as the urine was. Since there really isn't a good way to rinse the cleaner from absorbent materials such as carpet padding, couches, and mattresses the cleaner needs to work with the bacteria to efficiently and quickly break down the urine into inert components. A disinfectant type cleaner will only kill the bacteria that is living on the urine at the time the disinfectant is applied. The odor will be eliminated for a short time but will eventually return as bacteria once again come back to the soiled area. The best cat urine remover will contain bacteria and/or enzymes. This type of remover will increase the efficiency of the bacteria in breaking down the cat urine. Copyright 2005-2006 Square Pet Productions. All rights reserved |
