How to remove cat urine from carpet

When an "accident" happens on carpeting the urine goes through the carpet and into the padding underneath. When the urine gets to the flooring underneath the padding then the urine spreads horizontally, soaking into the padding and the flooring as it goes. While the spot on the top of the carpet may be very small, the actual extent of the urine may be as much as four times larger. Needless to say the closer to the actual "accident" the clean up process is started the less time the urine has to soak and spread.

Steps to removing cat urine from carpeting are as follows:

  • Soak up as much of the cat urine as possible with paper towels. Apply a gentle pressure with your hand, using a protective glove if you like. Do not use your foot to apply the pressure. The urine will be transferred to the bottom of your shoe. As you take steps the urine will be transferred up to several feet from the initial spot.
  • Change the paper towels as they become wet.
  • Continue until no more moisture is absorbed. Be sure to blot away from the original spot.
  • Saturate the spot and the underlying padding with an urine removal product. NOTE: Be sure to check for color fastness on a inconspicuous spot before doing this.
  • Let air dry
  • Repeat if odor is still present.
  • Remove the residue by applying a small amount of water and blotting with paper towels. The residue will attract dirt if it is not removed.
