How to remove cat urine from clothing

Cat urine stains on clothing make those items unsuitable for wear. If the stain was not enough the odor of the urine is an additional incentive to throw the item in the trash. However, with some pretreatment the item may be salvaged.

The chances of removing a cat urine stain from clothing, towels, or other fabrics is best when the stain is fresh and before any other cleaners or detergents have been used. Pretreating with an enzyme type cat urine cleaner before laundering will remove the urine and allow the urine and stain to be washed out in the laundry.    (NOTE: Always test for color fastness before using cleaner.)

Steps to removing cat urine from clothing, towels, and other fabrics are as follows:

  • Soak up as much of the cat urine as possible with paper towels. Apply a gentle pressure using a protective glove if you like.
  • Saturate the spot with an enzyme type urine removal product. NOTE: Be sure to check for color fastness on a inconspicuous spot before doing this.
  • Allow to sit for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • For particularly stubborn stains, place in a plastic bag overnight to allow the enzyme to completely break down the urine.
  • Wash as usual.
