Choosing Kitty Litter

The following are points to consider when choosing kitty litter.

Cost

Comparing cost pound for pound will not provide the best information for comparison. You need to consider how often the litter will need to changed or replenished. Clay type litters will need to be changed more often than the clumping variety or the silica gel crystal variety.

Some manufacturers provide guidelines on how long their brand of kitty litter will last. You will also need to consider how often you prefer to change the litter. Can you stand to not completely change the litter for a month? Two months? If you prefer to change the litter more often, then you need to factor that into your cost comparison

Dust & Tracking

All commercial kitty litters are marketed as being dust free with no tracking. Some are more dust free than others. The regular clay litters probably are the worst at dust and tracking. All types of kitty litter will track to some degree.

Fragrance Free and Chemical Free

Some litters have fragrances added to help mask litter box odors. Some litters such as cedar, pine, and citrus have their own "natural" fragrance. Some kitty litters have chemicals added to facilitate clumping and to aid in odor control.

Environmentally Friendly

Some kitty litter types are biodegradable and compostable. If you have a compost pile, you may add the litter when you clean out the box. If you have to put your litter in the trash, kitty litter that is biodegradable is more friendly to land fills.

Flushable

Some litters are advertised as being flushable. This makes disposing of waste very easy.
