Litter Box ConnectionThe litter box is one possible cause of elimination outside the litter box. Your cat may have used the same litter box with the same litter for several months or years without a problem. Then she quit using the box. If this happens the first thing you want to do is to take her to your veterinarian for an exam. This will rule out any medical causes for the change in behavior. If your veterinarian gives your cat a clean bill of health then you need to start examining the environment in your home. The litter box is part of your cat's environment. Perhaps your cat no longer likes the kitty litter you are using. The manufacturer may have changed the process of creating their brand of kitty litter. That change may have added something your cat does not like. Or may have removed something that your cat did like. You may not see or smell the difference but your cat certainly will. Is the kitty litter the cause? The only way to tell is to start experimenting with other cat litters. You may have to go through several to find the one your cat likes and will use. The best way to start is to determine your requirements for kitty litter. Then select 2 or 3 brands of kitty litter that meet your requirements. Put each new kitty litter out one at a time so you don't overwhelm your cat with too many new things at once. Leave each one out at least for a day. It may be pretty evident as soon as you put out the new litter whether your cat likes it or not. You may find the magic kitty litter on the first try. Or it may take several tries. You may have to compromise on some on your requirements. Your cat is not going to do any compromising.
