What is spraying?

Spraying of urine in cats is distinguished from urination by a small amount of urine on a vertical surface. While all cats -- male or female, neutered or spayed -- may exhibit urine spraying behavior, the unneutered male does it the most often.

The behavior is territorial in nature. In the wild it lets other cats know this is his territory and that they had better take notice. On trees and bushes the spraying is really of no consequence, but on your walls and furniture the spraying does become an issue.

You can clean up the sprayed areas with a retail product for cat urine removal. A strong smelling cleaner may cause the cat to remark the area. A black light can assist in finding all the areas that have been marked.

Feliway Feline Behavior Modification Products can be used to help discourage further spraying.
